Think about the cost of owning a pet
Pets are great but they're expensive. Think about the cost of buying the pet, registering and licensing it and getting the toys it needs. Consider the ongoing cost of food (including special diets), emergency and ongoing medical needs and costs of training the pet. Also think about the cost of having someone care for the pet if you are away and the cost of services like grooming. Think about whether you can afford this before you get any pet!

It's easy to underestimate the costs of owning a pet, especially when they get into older age and illness is more likely. Think about purchasing pet insurance - some policies will pay for portions of preventive care and if and when something really expensive comes along, it can really help. The range of coverage varies widely, so read the fine print!

Don't only think about the cost of keeping a pet. Also, ask yourself if you can really, really sacrifice your time and patience of keeping one--because in the end you might end up torturing or killing your pet. Consider the following : What if your pet chews on your rug, gnaws the door, poos on the expensive carpet, eats your morning newspaper, jumps on people, etc., etc., etc.
